Just helped my sister negotiate her first car purchase and was reminded how much strategy matters. Here's what worked: 1. We got quotes from 3 competing dealerships via email before ever setting foot in one. Saved hours. 2. We waited until the last week of the month. The sales manager was clearly motivated to hit a quota. 3. We were genuinely willing to walk away. Once they saw we weren't emotionally attached, the numbers got better. 4. We negotiated the OTD price, not the monthly payment. This is the most important thing. What negotiation tactics have worked for you?

I bring invoice pricing data from online valuation tools. When you show you know what they paid, the dynamic changes. Offer 3-5% over invoice for a fair deal.

Don't tell them you're paying cash until the price is locked. Dealers make money on financing so they might give a lower price if they think you're financing.

My best tip: go on a rainy Tuesday morning. Empty showroom, bored salespeople, motivated to deal. Saturday afternoon is the worst time.
